Baby-in-the-sink Bath

The first day I was hired to come shoot for this family I stopped in my tracks once I saw the kitchen sink. How the light fell onto the big farmhouse sink had me drooling to shoot more there. It didn’t work out on the newborn shoot we had, and two shoots later we still couldn’t find a way to fit it into our sessions.

It turns out, if you have an idea in your head, it is healthiest to just get it out, good or bad results aside, just follow your gut. When the news came that they outgrew their charming first home, I knew we had to do something in that sink before they packed up and left, so I scheduled a “fun” shoot, and just invited myself over to play. A joy comes over you when you follow your creative soul, and shooting this was just that. Grateful for this precious baby, and her adaptable parents.

My next idea might be something you can help me with. I am currently looking for a good yard to do a slip and slide in! Email me for another passion shoot just in time for summer.

New Work: Ergo Baby & Orbit Stroller

I still remember that nesting time, right before my baby was born. I scrambled around to make sure I had everything I could possibly need like clothes, toys, bags and such. A few weeks later as I sniffed in that newborn smell on my couch with sweet Kellen asleep on me. Only then could I admit to myself that all that I really needed was a healthy boob, a box of diapers, and my precious Ergo. The first two were inevitable. He will eat, and he will poop. But my survival depended on my sanity, and I usually find that out and about on adventures of the hiking or exploring type. We had countless naps, giggles, snuggles walking around in that Ergo. It was the only essential I recommend to those welcoming a baby in their lives.

Last fall I was lucky to shoot the summer campaign for Ergo Baby, and as the images are starting to pop up, I realize I am now able to share my favorites from that work. Here is our college of iPhone pictures taken with Kellen tucked safely into my pouch called the ergo, at the beach, dodger games, cave hunting, and just walking to school. With this campaign , Ergo announced a few great new carriers, one called the 360, where you can wear your baby facing outwards, and the award winning adapt that allows you to use it from infancy to toddler.

Kisses, kisses.

There are three children in this family, and somehow I cannot wrap my head around the fact that they are all three and under. Baffling! I know this kind of family is totally normal, and even my own mom was juggling four of us under the age of five, but the amount of energy needed to keep up is just so inspiring. So to all you mamas out there with littles so close together, my admiration goes out to you in this post.

Lucky mama, lucky kids, lucky husband, lucky in love having all this cuteness wrapped into one home. Of all the chaos packed into one day, there are the best memories made.

So congrats on the new addition, congrats on the adorable spirits that you are in charge of, they are spunky, joyful, and loving, and I couldn’t imagine a better combo!

The stork brings another baby to The Stork and the Beanstalk

Almost a year ago Ashely and I met at the beach where her kids managed to keep their pants on, and of course Kellen ran around in his birthday suit. She didn’t seem to be fazed too much, so I decided she was automatically in my inner circle of trust. More than that, Ashley of the stork and the beanstalk keeps it real, all the time. This sweet little boy has his birth story up on her blog, birth stories being some of my favorite stories of all.  I love the way her mind works, and she isn’t afraid to let everyone know the inner thinkings of a clever mom. So don’t be intimidated by her style and beauty, and head over to her blog where her words are just as fun as her photos. But most of all, I just wanted to congratulate her on welcoming her third boy into the world. family on bed with newborn mom and newborn third boy baby boy

Top 6 Locations to Take Family Photos In Orange County

We are so lucky to live in a place as magical as this is. Orange County, California has great weather, and beautiful parks and beaches, it can be a bit overwhelming to decide what backdrop you want to have for your holiday photos. Weather you are taking them yourself, or hiring a professional, your location can have a big impact on your photos. When choosing your location, think of what best represents your family. These are my top 6 favorite places to shoot photos here in Orange County, in no particular order.

1. Peltzer Farms Christmas Tree Lot- Nothing is more holiday than a Christmas Tree Farm, that is if you are celebrating Christmas! The location is beautiful, and sure to put you in the holiday spirit with the holly smells. For a small fee you can have a professional take your photos there too!

2. Ocean Tidepools- Of course check the tides before you head out, but it won’t even feel like photo taking to your kids, it will be like one big school field trip! Kids will have fun, and you know what happens to our faces when we are having fun right? Real natural smiles! Booya!

3. Open Spaces- Irvine Landmarks  just invited me to see some of the expansive open spaces that they are in charge of preserving, for-like-ever! So that is good news. It may take time narrowing down where you will go,but with over 20,000 acres you are sure to find a hill or path that will be perfect for pictures. Bring a kite, wagon or bike for some added fun for the family.

4. Piers- From Seal Beach to San Clemente, piers offer shade and variety in your beach pictures, and there is bound to be one you haven’t been to yet. Start under the pier for some fun, then end up ontop to watch the sunset. Maybe your pier will even have a Ruby’s at the end, to provide you with plenty of bribes for cute smiles!

5. Parks- Fun Orange County Parks  has done the research for you so if you need to see pictures before you go, I am sure Michelle has already taken one for you. You can also see if there are bathrooms or open trails for you to explore. Just make sure if you have young kids that you don’t start at the play structure as it will be difficult to pull them away!

6. San Juan Capistrano Mission- The Mission is a gorgeous backdrop for your family photos. Call before hand to be sure you reserve a spot if you are going with a professional, there is a small admittance fee, but it is gorgeous and your kids will love the fish!

Smash Cake- Rory turns one

cake for rory

family love mom and daughter one year old portraits one year old smash cake one year old walking one year old smash cake session toddler turns one

Look at Rory grow! No other time in a persons life do they change and grow as quickly as the first year of their life. They start as a delicate and helpless baby that relies completely on you for their every need. Then by the end they are smashing their own cake and stuffing it in their mouths, possibly teeter tottering around to keep up with big siblings, and possibly communicating a bit to let you know what they need. Rory turned six months here. The smash cake is from Sweet and Saucy Shop who make the most amazing cakes!

Rory under the pier

What makes Rory special?? It is hard to pick just one thing. Could it be the huge blue eyes staring at you so innocently? Possibly the fact that has rolls on her thighs that would make Meghan Trainor jealous! She has a gentle way about her, an easy going spirit mixed with a sprinkle of happiness that allows her to smile at the simplest of things. She smiles at me saying her name, at the touch of the wet sand beneath her toes, at her mom’s smooches, and the sound of the waves hitting the pier. Six months is a beautiful milestone to celebrate and capture forever. Thank you Rory for letting me kiss your sweet cheeks!

note: This crib was the same crib my dad lay in when he was a babe, as did I and all my siblings, as did all the grandchildren of my father. A special family crib I am honored to share with my babies.

Family Picnic Under a California Oak

One of my most favorite locations here in Orange County is sitting under the California Oak trees of our open spaces. They are everywhere, and if you need more ideas on where to go for your family picnic, see Fun Orange County Parks website that offers endless ideas. Summer is about over, but playing outside is year round in Southern California. Check that wonderful resource out for more ideas that fit your family style.

At this particular session, we enjoyed a foodless picnic blanket, and ended with a smash cake celebrating this baby’s first year. There are a few deer that visited us at the end of this family session, and it was magical even without our encounter. family on a hill family picnic under a tree girl running down hill kids picnic kids under a tree sibling love

OC Family Magazine Cover shoot

OC Family magazine work has been a huge source of joy for me over the past few years. Meeting local writers, inspirational moms, and families not only expands my orange county world, it blows my mind with happy and joyful people I would never have had the privilege to meet. One of these local celebrities in my eyes is Becky Brumfield who writes her own version of motherhood on a dare-you-to-not-laugh-out-loud blog at Hippo Brigade, and her husband Pat who designs for Normalcy. To see the cover shot, and how it turned out, see OC Family’s online version.
